CURC Steering Committee
July 11, 2000 Conference Call Minutes

Present - Pete Pasterz, Jack DeBell, Pam Flattich, Pat Chase, Dale Ekert, Julie Aplington, Craig Barry (NRC), Karyn Kaplan, Keefe Govus

1] Congress Plan updates

Track Programming

Karyn -- "Recycling as Higher Education" panel has been approved as an additional session. It looks like the session will be Monday Sept. 11 from 2-4. No progress yet on coding the track sessions to alert CURCers to what might be more of interest and/or relevant to them. Karyn will be working with NRC to move this forward and hopefully incorporate CURC information/announcements into related sessions. Jack would like to use the session/audience for promoting some of CURCs work (Tool Kit, etc). Maybe could do a brief plug for our activities at the session and have a display/poster in room with more information. Jack will contact committee chairs to see who wants to share what information and work with Krista (workshop) and Sara (track session) to incorporate.

SC agenda

Meeting will be Sat. 9/9/00 5-8 p.m. and Sun. 9/10/00 4:30 - 7 p.m. Need an agenda for the meeting. Pete will work with past agendas to try to pull together some ideas of what we should work on or discuss this year. Pam suggests the educational cookbook and project spreadsheet be shared and discussed at meeting. Additional suggestions should be forwarded to Pete.

Exhibit booth schedule

Need to confirm booth staffing and NRC support/funding for the volunteer(s) working the booth. Craig will find out what funding opportunities are available this year. Pam will only be able to attend if some funding is made available so maybe she can be the booth volunteer. Pete/Krista will distribute a schedule for booth staffing prior to the conference so steering committee members can staff booth as available/needed.

Council's reception

Council receptions are 5-8 Saturday which is during our steering committee meeting. Do we want to host something social on Sat. night following our meeting at 8? Could be at the same place as other council receptions. If so, we'd probably catch the other councils. Yes, Krista will look into doing something at this location (Dixie Tavern). Look into providing a round, some food or something? Funding for this? Craig will ask about potential donors for us to contact.

2] Committee Reports

Membership

Keefe - Intern was terminated due to performance and use of time. Keefe is trying to pull together a database from what little the intern did and other information available. She is also working with NRC regarding issues with the intern and payment for work not completed. If you know of any recycling contacts at Colleges or Universities, please share them with Keefe.

Regionals

Dale - Contact has been made with Yale and North Texas for preliminary discussions between the sites and NRC to discuss costs, etc. No site visits have happened yet but Dale will follow up with NRC to push the visits and further the site approval process. Luke, NRC, and Lance, N Texas, are exploring potential conflicts between having a spring CURC regional and the Texas Recycling Summit planned for this October. Thinking they may be able to use the October event to generate interest in a spring CURC regional. Need more NRC support to help determine feasibility of locations, potential conflicts with other events, etc. Craig, as our staff support, can help improve this. Dale also would like Craig to help him get financial figures and budgets from past regionals, which he has requested from NRC but not received. We should discuss our goals for regionals and what we hope to accomplish, who we hope to reach, etc. at the NRC conference. Pete adding to agenda.

Purchasing

Jack -- Received a second round of comments/revisions for the Tool Kit from Will. Jack is working through these, making amendments and will be going back to Will for final approval and distribution. Jack's working with Conservatree to develop an environmentally preferable product list for CU. This list will be available to CURC when complete.

3] Accountability x 2

How do we track ourselves and keep up with our progress, our ability to get things done, confront our barriers, etc? And how do we use this accountability method to fill monthly requirement to provide NRC with an update of council efforts. Pete will share a draft format for this with everyone for discussion on our next call.

4] August Call Date?

Move call to August 8 due to scheduling conflicts? Pat and Jack not available Aug. 8. Kurt, Pete, Julie and Jack not available on the 1st. Looks like we'll be going with Aug. 8 date.

5] NERC requested CURC provide access to its membership for announcing the BioCycle Northeast Regional conference 2000 "Focus on Food Residuals Management" by:

1) sending an electronic announcement via RECYC-L; and
2) by giving access to the CURC member list to send paper copies.

We agreed to 1), but not 2), in the interest of keeping our member list confidential, and not engaging in activities which generate what my be perceived by some as "junk mail". Pete will communicate this to NERC.
