CURC Steering Committee
February 7, 2001 Conference Call Minutes
Present: Julie Aplington, Pat Chase, Jack DeBell, Dale Ekart, Rob Gogan,
Keefe Harrison, Pete Pasterz, Kurt Teichert
Not Present: Craig Barry, Pam Flattich, Krista Henkels, Erica Spiegel
A. Council Leadership Retreat
Council’s would like to work together more. Pre-congress event
hosted by Minority Council last year could be joint event. Need for an “Orientation
Packet” for Council Steering Committee Members (generic NRC-related
info. and council-specific info.). Council collective used the CURC orientation
packet from last year as a model and added to it. NRC will maintain this
and distribute to new Council leaders.
B. Work Plan Status
Final Work Plan was sent to CURC steers by Pete on Jan. 9, 2001. Informal
feedback from NRC that they agree it would be appropriate for the CURC
web site to be hosted and maintained by NRC. We should get staff comments
or questions on our work plan in the next week or so with final approval
by the NRC Board at the March 8-9 meeting.
C. NRC bylaws review---CURC position on board representation for councils
NRC will
be rewriting their bylaws because of some inconsistencies with bylaws
and council
operational procedures. Considering having a bylaw
creating a CURC position on the NRC Board. Good idea except for possible
downfall of a time when there isn’t a CURC steer/member who is
able to or interested in serving on the Board. There is a better relationship,
communications, etc. with a CURC person on the NRC Board. The idea is
good but we wouldn’t want it to be mandatory position. If you have
any other feedback or comments on NRCs operations and/or bylaws, please
contact Pete.
D. Conference
Regionals
Coming
along well. Information is getting out soon and is ahead of schedule
from the previous years. Site stuff is nailed
down and continuing to work on speakers and sponsors. If you are
interested in helping or have ideas for either conference, please
contact Dale,
CJ (Yale) or Lanse (NTX). CJ and Lanse are working on sponsors
and exhibitors. They have some sponsors nailed down and still have
others
to contact,
some which are promising. Have two national sponsors at this point
with other potentials. Looks like money is going to be alright.
Teleconference is coming along and we should all be promoting the event,
hosting, and attendance. The list of confirmed sites is available on
the web. Dale will check with Luke on promoting CURC and how to become
a member during the teleconference.
Dale will also be doing a mini-workshop at the Utah state conference
and will report back on how it goes, how it relates and compares to our
regionals.
Pre-Congress
CURC
will have a pre-congress workshop. Karyn Kaplan suggested we work
on incorporating a workshop by the Natural Step. The
Natural Step, http://www.naturalstep.org, looks at fundamentals of
sustainable development and how that relates to or can be incorporated
into a business
(or school’s) operations. Would be a perk and way to expand our
knowledge and horizons through this annual event that CURC members usually
attend. There is a movement towards sustainability practices and knowledge
of this would benefit us all. Pete will share this idea with Krista when
he talks to her tomorrow.
Track
sessions
Karyn
Kaplan will again be taking the lead on track sessions and coordination
with NRC. Calls for papers will go to
Karyn so she can work through them and session ideas before they
go
to NRC for final decision. In this way, CURC can work on proposing
full
track sessions as opposed to random individual speakers. Deadline
is being extended.
NSDA-NRC
scholarships, contacting them, etc
Want to
get this NSDA program moving and out there before the summer when
students are
gone. Julie will contact Preston at NSDA about this. Pete will get
Julie Preston/NSDA’s number. Hope to get this information out by April
when schools begin to wind down the academic year.
E. Purchasing
NACUBO (business officers) review of soft drink kit -- Pete got a phone
call from a person at an Eastern school referring to an article in the
NACUBO magazine about the CURC soft drink tool kit and her concern about
something stated in the article. Everyone see if you can get a copy of
this article. Jack has gotten positive feedback on the toolkit from APPA
people. Jack would like to see this distributed to student groups. Pete
will look into the possibility of funding a bulk purchase of the toolkit
for distribution to students.
We need
to look at our relationship with Earth Systems in connection with the
Virtual
Shopping Center (VSC) and joint purchasing issues. There
is no written agreement on this relationship. VSC is not something that
we are working on taking over or continuing on the CURC web site under
NRC management. Kurt’s discussions with Fritz led him to believe
that there currently isn’t much activity through the CURC web site
to the VSC. VSC is entirely separate from CURC. The only stated link
between CURC and VSC was reference or link to CURC joint purchasing.
Jack will look into this item on our work plan and Kurt will help to
make sure we undo any ties or links between CURC and VSC.
F. Outreach
Web progress – The “events” and steering committee
contact lists have been updated. Kurt is looking for a student to help
with the project of web site conversion. Kurt’s attempts at routine
maintenance of the site are cumbersome and he hopes to get at least a
basic page established on the NRC web site to move us forward quickly
and smoothly. Need to begin to get people information with our new NRC-based
web site address. Initial attempts to establish a search of RECYC-L archives
through an NRC system have gone well, and it looks like controlling access
to the archives will work well through NRC. Kurt is still working with
Erica and Christine for feedback on web site changes/progress. Hope to
get our new web site out through the Feb. teleconference.
G. Elections
Keefe nominated
as "election master," with
the target for voting days being mid-March and new SC in place by first
call in April.
Pete will send Keefe the past election info. If your term is up, please
let us know if you plan to run again, so we know how many new recruits
will be necessary.
Current terms (which began May 2000):
Julie Aplington (2 years)
Pat Chase (2 years)
Jack Debell (1 year)
Dale Ekart (1 year)
Pam Flattich (2 years)

H. AFPA
AFPA has
asked to use our mailing list for distribution of Office Paper recycling
award information. Decided, as with other such requests, to
allow them to draft an e-mail to be edited/posted to RECYC-L, soliciting
interested subscribers to contact AFPA directly for applications.
Pete will contact Christine McCoy, AFPA, to let her know decision,
and to
post e-mail if they want to do it our way.
