Return to CURC Minutes
CURC Steering Committee
March 7, 2001 Conference Call Minutes
Present: Pat Chase, Jack DeBell, Dale Ekart, Rob Gogan, Keefe Harison,
Pete Pasterz, Kurt Teichert, Erica Spiegel, Karyn Kaplan, Pam Flattich
Not Present: Julie Aplington, Craig Barry, Krista Henkels
1. Budget Update
Pete reported on
status of budget. NRC Board received copy and CURC budget was submitted.
$6,200 deficit in budget due to amount of NRC staff
time charged to CURC, especially John Thompson their computer guy. As
of Monday, NRC did not finalize the “carry forward” balance.
Budget is in limbo, unless Board approves the budget without questions.
It is still unclear what the staff assurances for increased council support
will mean for our project budgets.
2. Elections Update
Keefe has heard absolutely
nothing regarding nominees to run. She’s
been trying to contact CURC members who are not on Recyc-L and/or do
not have e-mail. She’s forwarded message to other states listservs
too. Rob and Pat will solicit involvement from their respective areas,
northeast and southwest. (Message was sent to RECYC-L on March 1st).
Current terms expiring: Kurt = no; Dale and Pete = maybe; Jack = undecided;
Rob = yes. There are more vacancies than people interested in running
at this time. Should it be “not an election” but rather more
personal contact, e.g., each SC member should contact individuals who
might be interested. Several names were mentioned. MAKE A PHONE CALL
TO FOLKS you feel would make good leaders. Individuals should be in touch
with Keefe.
Orientation -- Electronic
packets were given to new Steering Committee members last time. We
should check to make sure these are up to date.
Also, in the Council Leader’s meeting last month in Denver all
councils agreed to contribute to a larger leader info packet, which will
in future be housed at NRC. NRC staff can mail orientation packets out.
Pete may ask for input. Jack will mail him some items.
3. NRC Board CURC slot
NRC full board is
meeting later this week. Pete is chair of the NRC by-laws task force.
The question of whether Councils should have an “automatic” slot
on the NRC Board will be discussed. SC generally expressed affirmative
on this. Pete will advocate having a CURC slot on the board.
4. Committee Reports
A. Conferences
Regionals
Dale
said things are going well for YALE, this Tuesday! No details,
but it is going smoothly. Dale is in touch with Lance.
NRC
Pre-Congress Workshop
Krista
provided a written report (since she is not on call). Will have
a half-day workshop with Natural Step
in the AM and afternoon roundtables and discussions. Rob has been
to
a Natural Step workshop and he thinks it was worthwhile. Karyn
also attended part of one, and the case studies were very valuable.
Suggestion is to
focus program on case studies and success stories. Looking to have
tour of Seattle area school.
NRC
Congress Track Sessions
Karyn
Kaplan is on the congress committee and they are meeting in next
two weeks to discuss abstracts and fill
out schedule. Rebecca, NRC, has mailed abstracts to committee members.
Hot topics include ISO 14000, electronics recycling, purchasing,
and Zero Waste. Karyn summarized abstracts from CURC people.
Great job keeping
us in the loop! Thanks Karyn. She is also gathering lists of cool
places in Seattle to visit (e.g., a music museum, a game bar, etc).
This year there is
a special committee to deal with Zero Waste at the conference itself.
Lin King (UC Davis) and Julie Muir (Stanford) are
on this committee, and Seattle is a much more “recycle friendly” place.
Karyn asked for someone to give her the current SC email list and she’ll
keep us informed. Julie will send list to Karyn.
B. Outreach
Web
Update
Kurt
has developed the framework for new site on NRC. Nothing has been
changed on old site; this will be left running and eventually
will be phased out. CONTENT is what is needed. The framework
is there.
Please look at the site, gather/write additional information
and send Kurt to fill in the blanks. Send good links to him as
well.
Kurt said
it would be difficult to continually update the content if it
has to be emailed to John at NRC. How would NRC feel if a SC member
had direct
access to publish to the web?
You can get to the new and improved web page by clicking through NRC
site or go directly to: http://www.nrc-recycle.org/councils/CURC/. Kurt
will continue to help with management of the site. NRC does not have
the staff or expertise at this time to manage it.
Cookbooks
Pam
e-mailed the “appetizers” to Kurt for posting
on the web page. Karyn said that a group in California (Lin King,
Julie Muir and Alec Cooley) already did this, and that we should
share this
resource, and not re-create something. Pete is checking with Krista
on what the status is and how best to approach the CAcurc.
Profiles/Standards
(Now called “Benchmarking”)
Rob said
there are no new updates. He encourages colleges to fill them out.
One idea was to send the Excel spreadsheet to all new members when
they join.
How do we get information updated and posted on Web in a timely way?
One suggestion is to make entry a “requirement” of joining
CURC [or renewing membership---no fee, just info!!!]
C. Purchasing
Vending
tool kit
No verification
of NACUBOs piece on the Vending Tool Kit. According to
Jack, there was some media coverage based on the
media list it was sent to. NRC has received several requests
for the packet. Jack asked for some input on the Concessions Contract
Tool Kit.
Earthsystems
Pete
was unable to piece together the meeting on an agreement with
earthsystems. Stay tuned.
D. Membership
Affiliations
We
have a couple of organizations that have come up over and
over. We would like to think about their potential and how we
can work together with them. Roger Guzowksi may work with
APPA
connection. Pete & Kurt will work with NWF. Surplus managers-
school to school contact. Pete and Karyn will figure out
how to connect for the Surplus/NRC
events happening in OR at the same time.
