Return to CURC Minutes
CURC Steering Committee
April 11, 2001 Conference Call Minutes
Present: Julie Aplington, Ann Felkel, Pam Flattich, Rob Gogan, Keefe
Harrison, Krista Henkels, Pete Pasterz, Bob Skillin, Erica Spiegel, Kurt
Teichert
Not Present: Craig Barry, Pat Chase, Jack DeBell, Dale Ekart, Roger
Guzowski, Butch Michitson
1. Welcome new steers, thanks to departing steers, orientation, etc.
Ann and Bob, the
two new steers present, gave brief introductions. Kurt, a departing “steer,” will
continue to be involved with our web site and will be present on occasional
calls.
Our monthly call is currently scheduled for the first Wed. of each month
at noon eastern time and generally lasts about an hour and fifteen minutes.
If any new members have a conflict with this time, please let Pete know.
New members will soon receive a CURC orientation packet with council
activities, past work plans, etc. NRC will also send you basic NRC/council
information and guidelines.
Election of officers
will take place on our next conference call, currently scheduled for
Wednesday, May 2, noon eastern time. Positions to be nominated
include: chair, vice-chair, secretary, regional representatives, committee
chairs – outreach, purchasing, membership, conferences.
Pete will send descriptions of positions.
2. Committee Reports
Conferences
The
CURC Regional Conference in Texas was cancelled last week due
to low registration and lack of commitment from sponsors.
No further details available at this time. We will be reviewing
regional conferences, how/if to proceed, plans, etc. in the near
future.
On the brighter side, the partnership with the Utah state conference
went very well, and Dale considers this kind of partnership a good possibility
for the future. The Yale conference also went well with good attendance.
Annual pre-NRC Congress CURC workshop is again planned for this year
with Krista planning the event. Trying to have broader based presentation
this year with The Natural Step doing a morning workshop, then lunch,
roundtable discussions and hopefully a tour of a local campus. We may
be able to draw more people (and thus make more money) to our workshop
by marketing The Natural Step to a wider audience and maybe having a
separate fee structure for attending just The Natural Step versus the
whole days events.
What is the status of the NSDA scholarships? NSDA is planning to do
them again and is interested in trying to get the information out earlier
but has not yet given us any details. Julie will follow-up with Preston,
NSDA, regarding the status of this.
Rob requested that
Pete & Krista put in a plug to the NRC for the
later date at the Congress this year which is better for those of us
in academia.
The CURC Steering
Committee annual meeting is held each year prior to the NRC Congress.
This year we’d again like to split up our meeting
into two parts. We need to check other scheduling issues but tentatively
plan on 5-8 PM Saturday 9/29, and 5-8 PM Sunday 9/30, for our annual
Steering Committee meeting.
Outreach
Working
with NRC on security/protection of RECYC-L list serve. Kurt isn’t sure about how the password access is working,
who is trying out and visiting the new web site. No definitive answer
as to how much longer Earth Systems will continue to host the old site.
We have received an invoice from Earth Systems for Jan 1 – Dec.
31, 2001. We need to talk to them about this and figure out what we owe
them and how much longer we might need their services. Kurt and Pete
will look into services still needed from Earth Systems, payment owed,
etc.
Outreach has also been tasked with looking into relationships with organizations
such as APPA, NWF, etc. At this point all relationships are informal.
Roger Guzowski has offered to serve as our liaison/committee chair to
work with these groups.
The most recent edition
of the NRC Connection newsletter has a blurb asking members to send
in information with their alma mater’s recycling
contact. This can be found on the back page of the newsletter.
The April 6, 2001
article in the Chronicle of Higher Education is a great outcome of
our “benchmarking” efforts. The author used
the CURC benchmarking data heavily in writing the article. Benchmarking
information and formulas can also be used for competitions between schools.
Cookbooks/Toolkits
Had
talked about seeing what CA did recently and possibly sharing info.
or publishing something together. However,
what CA did is currently on hold so we should move forward with our
own efforts. A small portion of the education cookbook is currently
posted
on the CURC web site (http://www.nrc-recycle.org/councils/CURC/), under “members
only,” and then “idea swap.” People should send ideas
to Pam for cookbook/toolkits. We need to decide what the cookbook/toolkit
focus will be – education and/or operations, will there be one
or two, etc. Pam will send out an e-mail survey to help shape what we’re
doing.
3. Slate Selection Committee (SSC)
We are in the nomination period for the NRC Board. Krista, as co-chair
of the Slate Selection Committee, is soliciting volunteer(s) for a CURC
representation on the SSC. Please let Krista know by next Tuesday, 4/17,
if you are interested. Krista will e-mail the SSC member application
so interested parties can take a look at it.
Just in case you missed it the first time, here are the names and e-mail
addresses of the new steering committee, originally sent in an e-mail
from Keefe on April 4.
