Return to CURC Minutes
CURC Steering Committee
September 5, 2001 Conference Call Minutes
Present: Pat Chase, Ann Felkel, Pam Flattich, Rob Gogan (Acting Secretary),
Roger Guzowski, Keefe Harrison, Kate Krebs, Butch Michitson, Pete Pasterz,
Bob Skillin
Not Present: Julie Aplington, Krista Henkels
1) Seattle finals:
A. Informal networking sessions:
Karyn Kaplan looking into possible locations:
Sat 9/29: 8 PM CURC possible reservations at the Cloud Room at top of
Camlin hotel
Tues 10/2: Pike Brewing Co microbrewery/restaurant; take reservations
for Tuesdays so CURC is
seeking reservation there. Kate is looking for info to put into printed
brochure; deadline soon.
B. Meeting
updates:
Sunday afternoon
Natural Step workshop has been cancelled because of booking mix-up
(RoundTables will happen Sunday at 9 as scheduled).
Kate: We need to get letter to registrants informing them of this.
Pete: The absence of this program presents several possibilities:
doing CURC Steer meeting on Sunday; doing an all-invited lunch off-site
Sunday (three said this was good idea). Roger: It would be nice to
have early feedback from members before CURC membership meeting Tues
PM so that we can compose an action plan that actually meets members’ needs
rather than just tells members what the Steers’ action plan
is. Pete: Based on past experience, steers need 4 to 8 hours of meeting
time. Pat: How about 7 to 7:30 AM Sunday to pow-wow before 9 AM workshop?
[Sounds best to everyone.] Kate: Round tables will be in Conference
Center; Rebecca from NRC is working on the rooms. By this weekend,
we will have program published. Roger: Let’s try to get something
going on Saturday, since many of us will be there. Pete: Let’s
stick with Tuesday night Business Meeting since Sunday is crowded.
Pete: How about a Sunday breakfast to get ready for member lunch input
session? [Consensus
agreement]. Is the Saturday meeting time still good? Pat: Yes, and we’ll
put together agenda for
breakfast. Pete: I think we could do a 4:30 start, with the understanding
that PP and KH will be
leaving by 5:30 or so. [Sounds good] Kate: There is a food court at the
conference center for possible
breakfast or Saturday night dinner...
New meeting schedule:
Sat 4:30--6:30 PM Steers meeting
8 PM Cloud Room reception [tentative]
Sun 7:30 AM Breakfast near Conference Center (location to be determined
Saturday).
9 AM Round Tables
12 Noon Dutch Treat Lunch; then member feedback from 2 till 7 PM. Kate:
If you need a room for
this, send request to Rebecca.
Tues 4-6 PM Annual Business Meeting
8 PM Pike Brewing Co [tentative]
C. Post card
[Keefe to make schedule
revisions, esp. “Sunday Dutch Treat Lunch
in Happenin’ Downtown Seattle”
to sound off about CURC member needs!] Pete: To include room number for
sound-off meeting
Sunday afternoon. Keefe: OK.
D. Booth
Keefe: Want to build and ship a crescent-shaped booth viewers would
walk through displaying the
stages of a college or university waste reduction plan. Also we have “Recycling
Hero” temporary
tattoos and candy. UNC can fund building board, can CURC fund mailing?
Pete, Kate: Probably.
Erica: Do we have any leftover brochures? Pete: will check. All should
bring any they find
E. Planning issues to be discussed:
Discussion]: Pete,
Roger: What are the tangible benefits (deliverables) of CURC? Pam:
We have some stuff already listed from our e-mail exchanges.
Keefe: But we need to also talk about what we should do in the future.
Ann: Many feel more that CURC is a clique and we don’t know what
it does. Pete: Membership survey will be useful in determining why members
join/don’t join. Pam: We need foundation of information, web page
tips on move-out for urban schools, rural schools, etc. Searching the
Recyc-L archives is time consuming. One good idea would be a glossary
of terminology, acronyms, etc. We need to focus on “What are our
members’ needs?” rather than speculate. How we fulfill them
is under discussion. What is the role for regional reps? One other issue
is conferences and educational outreach plans, esp. with the review of
regional conferences. What other means are available for disseminating
information?
Pete’s summary
of topic headings for planning discussion on Sunday:

Please add any you feel need to also be addressed, and be prepared to
