Not Present: Kate Krebs

1] Seattle plans

a] Track sessions update

Nothing new, all are a go. Information on the sessions will be included with a CURC NRC schedule, which will be sent to Recyc-l, the post card, etc. Keefe will review the schedule and handle post card and CURC member notices. Julie will send to Recyc-l.

b] SC meetings agenda

Pete, please note suggestions, additions, etc. for the agenda as follows. We should add to our agenda developing guidelines for replacing steering committee members and for our regional balance. Also, Roger inputted that we should take a look at our goals, and projects with an eye towards the need to regroup and/or redefine them and our target audience. Pete will work on timing of the agenda. Roger suggested keeping time frames loose so we don't have to cut ourselves off before finishing an issue. Pam suggested grouping related agenda items together.

c] Workshop Update

Krista - workshop is good to go, and we have a couple more speakers to add. Natural Step is on as before.

d] Informal/Member Gatherings and Meetings

All are set and are included in the schedule to be sent out to Recyc-l, etc.

2] Discussion with Alec Cooley and Julie Muir, CA Collegiate Recycling Council (CCRA), on "Cookbook" collaboration:

UC Davis had an agreement with the Integrated Waste Mgmt. Board (IWMB) to write a manual, " 'How To' Models and Manuals for State Agencies and Public Colleges and Universities." The manual covers how to develop and manage campus recycling/waste reduction programs. Publication of the manual is on hold as IWMB has said they will not pay for the document because it doesn't meet the scope of work. There is currently a legal battle over this. CCRA is trying to figure out options - break ties with the IWMB and rewrite, CCRA buy the document and get it published, etc. Question to CURC is how does CURC want to be involved? CURC had looked into developing a "cookbook" of educational ideas. Before that was completed, members began talking about doing a broader manual to include more than educational ideas. It was at that time that CURC got wind of what CCRA was doing and wanted to learn more so we didn't duplicate efforts. If the document is re-written by CCRA, CURC or some collaboration, it could be used without concern as to what IWMB does. The document could be a good member benefit for both CCRA and CURC. The longer the current document sits the more likely it is that information in it will be outdated and/or no longer useful. The web may be the best place for publication due to ease of access, updates, etc. If anyone is interested in being involved and writing a new manual, rewriting chapters, etc., contact Julie Muir <juliem@pssi.stanford.edu>. A collection of white pages or some other format may be a better way to go than a "textbook" type document.

3] SC member appointments

Due to the current regional balance of steering committee members, Ed Newman was nominated, seconded and voted in. Victoria Silva, as the only candidate for Midwest Regional Representative, was nominated, seconded and voted in. Pat will notify the parties.

4] Committee Reports

a] Outreach

Rob discussed the problems with accessing the "members only" section of the web site. NRC is having problems with its ISP that are causing this and is working to correct it. Sometimes access problems have to do with differences between state rosters and information given to NRC. We do need to work on this in order to move forward with our attempts to get people to access and update the benchmarking section. The inter-school competition started in Ohio can be use to help promote not only campus recycling but also interest in using the CURC Benchmarking data. Pete will send out a message to RECYC-L to let people know what's going on with access and update the information as possible.

b] Membership:

Keefe is busily coordinating calls to all on the CURC list to update the membership database. There are some problems with area codes but they plan to e-mail and then US mail anyone they can't reach via phone. Pam will look for a list of area code changes to share with Keefe.

5] Other

January call - Pete will send out an e-mail to reschedule the January call since it falls the day many of us return from the long holiday break.
