Present: Julie Cahillane, Pat Chase, Pam Flattich, Pete Pasterz, Rob Gogan, Keefe Harrison, Butch Michitson, Ed Newman, Erica Spiegel

Not Present: Kate Krebs, Roger Guzowski, Krista Henkels, Victoria Silva.

Agenda:

1. Welcome new steers

2. Last minute Seattle planning/update
a) Social events confirmed? Karyn has confirmed all events, no changes. Schedule is as sent to RECYC-L by Julie yesterday.

b) Steering committee planning – Need to get our room assignment for the Steering Committee meeting by next Thursday. Pete will check with NRC about this. Pete is sending a final draft for the Steering Committee Planning agenda via e-mail shortly. Please review and send comments or changes to Pete. Alec Cooley and Julie Muir would like to talk to us a bit about their campus recycling manual. We will add them to the agenda for the beginning of the Sunday segment of our meeting.

3. Committee Reports
a) Membership – Keefe still working on updating the CURC list. Once the list is updated Keefe will distribute it to CURC members. We should consider options for notifying members about CURC and what’s happening. Maybe another postcard? If Keefe does more postcards, postage will need to be paid for by CURC/NRC. Next step is to have the student worker look for non-CURC members, let them know about CURC and try to get them signed up. Ed has a student worker who could possibly help with the process. One thing that should be looked at is the joint NRC/SRO membership issue and accessing lists of potential members from SROs.

b) Outreach – NRC web site is still having problems. You can access the site but it is not password protected at this point. Rob is working with OH schools to expand the competition they did last fall to include Harvard for a recycling collection competition between the schools. They’d love to expand it to other athletic leagues and schools as a way to promote recycling and participation. Working on figuring out how to accurately compare what’s collected between the schools and various methods of record keeping/tracking. There are many things to consider and to work on to make this applicable across multiple schools.

There is an opportunity to advertise CURC on the RecyclingToday.com web site. Rob will contact Recycling Today to ask about the details. Pete will check with NRC about doing this. We will discuss on our next call.

Rutgers University is doing a big environmental audit. Would be nice to find out what it includes, etc. Rob will contact Kevin Lyons, Rutgers, to find out more and let us know.

4. NRC updates
Kate Krebs is acting NRC director. There is a search committee looking for a new director. Due to postponement of congress and travel restrictions NRC will be a smaller congress (attendees and exhibitors) and thus generate less income. NRCs big push will be for Austin (Sept. 2002) to be a bigger congress. This translates to a lesser budget for CURC this year. This is a concern. We have not yet resolved the issue of our “carry forward” balance and what happens to it when the budget is in trouble. We will discuss funding and support in our strategic planning meetings. There are a lot of things still pending that may make this a less or more severe situation – such as the final outcome of Seattle revenues. NRC is currently taking steps to cut their budget/spending.

5. Per Keefe – don’t forget to bring educational materials from your program for the display/booth.
