1. Austin Debrief and follow-up

A. Planning Meeting - Only about half of us were able to make it to NRC and the CURC planning meeting. Some of our discussion was not as effective or thorough as hoped since attendance was lower than usual. Focused more on current work plan status than on a work plan for next year (current work plan was just developed in Seattle in January). Spent a couple hours discussing our concerns about the CURC/NRC relationship with Meg Morris, NRC President. It was a productive discussion with a lot of listening on Meg's part. This discussion should improve/resolve issues in our relationship with NRC. Meetings with past presidents and executive directors haven't been as positive, and we haven't had the feeling we were being 'heard' in the past. Meg plans to be sure new board members understand Council guidelines, rights, etc.

B. Business Meeting - About 30 members attended. Fewer attendees than in past years but there were some competing activities that had not been planned when our meeting was scheduled. Member survey, to be distributed soon, will include a question about when members prefer to have the business meeting. Maybe we can incorporate, earlier in the NRC schedule, a social-dinner-business meeting get-together. Pat will add to the survey a question asking when members usually show up when they attend NRC. Our discussion included: working with ROs on doing workshops; plans for the welcome packet; web page; and standards/benchmarking participation. Members again requested monthly reminders when minutes are posted. We've found that our member list and thus e-mail distribution is not as accurate as we had hoped. Pat is working on updating the list and will send it to Julie when complete (so e-mail distribution can be updated). When this is done, we can distribute both the member survey and Dale's 'benchmarking encouragement' notice. Want to make an effort to put our needs for volunteers/CURC projects in more concrete terms so people can sign up for specific tasks instead of for a nebulous committee. All steers should put together a list of specific tasks they think need to be accomplished and need volunteer support and forward to Pete.

C. Total congress attendance was down a bit. Sessions were great and exhibit hall was good but a bit smaller event and thus a bit less revenue.

2. Work Plan

Need to pull together our work plan by December. Will be on the agenda for our next call. Be thinking about work plan, budget, etc. for the next year.

3. Welcome Packet

Christine von Kolnitz and Karyn Kaplan gave us a draft Membership Welcome packet, including the "ABCs" of campus recycling. Pete will distribute the draft to all who were not in Austin. Those who were in Austin should have the copy they received there. Pat is trying to reach Keefe to figure out what she was doing for a welcome packet and what she has left. Will discuss this on our next call when we have distributed the draft and have more information from Keefe.

4. Vendor plan

Pete will resend Mike's ideas for a vendor plan to the steering committee. We did not get a chance to discuss it in Austin since there were so few of us there. Hopefully we can discuss it on the next call and Mike will be able to make the call as well.

5. Committee status reports

A. Benchmarking/standards -- see above, Dale's effort to encourage CURC members to compile their benchmarking information is forthcoming. Kurt Teichert says there is interest in standardizing energy reduction information and maybe this can be incorporated into our standards in the future. NRC has a nice calculator on their web site for realizing environmental impacts of recycling. University of VA has a great tracking page on their web site.

B. Membership -- If anyone has any additional information for the CURC member list (additions, corrections, updates, etc.), please send to Pat. Pat will e-mail Krista to see if we can get an updated list from NRC as well. Pete has been working to be sure that when members join NRC through ROs they know there are NRC councils and how to join them.

6. Other

A. PA has issued a recycling challenge to about 15 PA colleges (http://www.dep.state.pa.us/hosting/rushtorecycle/default.htm). Believe this idea came from Ed's "Recycle Mania" (RM) contest. Hope to include more schools in the next round of RM this spring.

B. All steers please be sure to notify Pete if you are unable to make our monthly calls. It helps to know who to wait for and when we can start the call.
