Return to CURC Minutes
CURC Steering Committee
December 15, 2003 Conference Call Minutes
Present: Michael Alexander (NRC), Sheela Backen, Julie Cahillane, Pat
Chase, Angie Fowler, Rob Gogan, Pete Pasterz, Jack DeBell, Ed Newman,
Carolyn Noack, Pete Pasterz, Michael Youdelman
Not Present: Alana Levine
1] Michael
Alexander, NRC, joins us to see what we’re doing and participate
in any NRC-related discussions, particularly San Fran congress planning.
2] Work
Plan/budget update
Pete spoke
with Ben Walker and asked about process for council submission of work
plans…he is to get back to us.
Michael A. wasn’t familiar with the issue and our question about whether
or not NRC would be expecting a work plan and budget from CURC. He will
check into it for us.
3] Webmaster
Pete
has not yet gotten to the description of the webmaster position but
will draft one and send it to the steers for input.
4] Membership
Keefe
Harrison (former membership chair) did not have any information about
a list of non but potential CURC members. According
to Michael A. NRC may be adding some more states to the affiliated
list. This should provide CURC with some additional members. Also,
fyi, Maryland
recently disaffiliated. Angie has the CURC member list and will be
working on it soon. Michael A. will check on NRCs ability to sort members
by
CURC-status.
5] Regional
Workshops
CA planning – Pat is planning to touch base
with Julie Muir in CA this week. Pat will send a note to the steers regarding
this conversation.
6] Rapid
Response
Western
Michigan’s program is going to be cut somehow.
A rapid response letter of support might be helpful to Carolyn’s program.
Jack has the draft of the letter. It needs some work and customization
and Jack can send it out to the steers tomorrow. Audience is varied – VPs,
Deans, Directors, Community, etc. Content would be benefits of recycling,
urging to reconsider cuts to recycling, ideas to help fund and support
the program and the critical role of the recycling coordinator position.
Jack will get the letter to Julie for distribution to steers in the next
day or two. Jack would like to see some effort to qualify those who will
receive this kind of letter of support. Limit it to members? Make submitting
standards information mandatory to getting a support letter? Have a CURC
steer as a ‘champion’ to work with that school. Offer resources for the
administrator with the letter? Maybe our ABCs guidebook can serve as
a resource. Jack has a one-page resource letter that could go with the
rapid response letter and will include it with the letter. Need to keep
in mind the audience/recipient of the letter. We decided to defer to
the person requesting the letter as to who best to send the letter to
on campus. A group of steers could be designated to review individual
letters. Ed, as the lead person on the rapid response issue can consult
with Pete on letters requested and Angie is willing to back up the effort.
7] APPA/NWF
Jack
is waiting for brochures to take to the APPA Institute. There are
some remaining brochures, which will be sent by NRC to Jack.
NRC does not plan to print additional brochures at this time but does
plan to work on design in preparation for printing at a later date.
Could we get NRC to format our brochure in a downloadable format from
the website?
We could save NRC printing money by printing some brochures ourselves
if this was done in a format that could be printed easily. Michael
A. will follow up on these issues.
8] NERC
project
CURC is
supporting the Northeast Recycling Council’s
(NERC) grant proposal for a college and university energy and solid waste
calculator. Michael A. is not familiar with the new NERC proposal but
is familiar with the calculator and believes it is very similar to what
NRC has.
9] Recycle
Mania
This year
has 16 participants thus far. Contest begins February 1, 2004.
10] January
call
The scheduled
day of the call falls on the day of the Martin Luther King
observance. Pete will e-mail some options for
call days.
