Return to CURC Minutes
CURC Steering Committee
March 15, 2004 Conference Call Minutes
Present: Julie Cahillane, Pat Chase, Jack DeBell, Angie Fowler, Rob
Gogan, Alana Levine, Pete Pasterz
Not Present: Sheela Backen, Ed Newman, Carolyn Noack, Michael Youdelman
1. Work
Plan/NRC discussion
NRC gave
us a very short turn-around time in which to submit our budget and
work plan despite our asking for the
timeline for the process for a couple months. They also indicated that
the budget was fairly set already but we could submit something if
we wanted. We continue to be frustrated by NRCs lack of inclusiveness
in
regards to CURC. This is something we could discuss over the next few
months and come to an agreement on how and where to address it most
effectively. Will discuss further after the upcoming steering committee
elections.
2. Election
update
We have
the call for nominations and ballot from last year. Pete will edit
these for use this year. Julie will distribute
the e-mail version of the call for nominations and ballots. Will allow
3-4 weeks for nominations with a reminder sent out a week before the
nomination period closes. Need to review the call for nominations (regional
reps particularly). Regional representation is a good idea and we should
encourage participation from all areas. However, we cannot count on
getting reps from all areas so it shouldn’t be mandatory.
3. Membership
recruitment
Angie has
had staff calling those CURC members for whom we do not have an
e-mail address. Calling has not been
as effective as she had hoped so she will be sending notes via US mail
requesting updated information.
Angie has not yet received a CURC list from NRC but will follow up
with them today and will also ask them about the development of council
list serves and
getting one set up for CURC.
4. Rapid
Response
Jack is
hoping to get some input from Carolyn on how the RR letter worked
for her campus. Need to work on standardizing
the process and increasing the best practices and supporting documentation.
Once the process is standardized we can promote the service. School
would need to be a CURC member in order to receive the letter and/or
fill out
the standards/benchmarking information. Angie (membership chair) could
verify membership status. Jack will try to wrap up what needs to be
done to complete and standardize the letter and process.
5. SF Congress
A. Workshop -- Pat has talked to Julie Muir. Would like to do a ½ day
workshop on Sunday with round table type discussions. There would also be a
panel summary from each round table moderator at the end. Will solicit round
table topics from members. The drawback is that there are quite a few tours
on Sunday that compete with our plans. However CURC has always competed with
other NRC activities so we will go ahead with workshop plans. Julie M. is looking
into options for a CURC tour Sunday afternoon and a location for the Sat. night
social gathering. Pat and Julie M. are hoping to put together a PowerPoint
presentation with information from attending schools highlighting success,
problems, etc. Pat will look into making copies of the presentation to distribute
to attendees.
B. Track Sessions -- Pat is in touch with Karyn regarding efforts to include
CURC-sessions at NRC. NRC will not have tracks this year but we are working
to assure CURC-related topics/sessions are an option.
6. Other
RO workshops?
A. Ohio -- will have to check with Ed on this
B. NRRA (Northeast Resource Recovery Assoc. N. New England RO) – Angie will
look into NRRA plans for a CURC-related workshop at their annual conference.
C. NERC (Northeast Recycling Council) – Angie will look into what NERCs plans
are also.
D. CO – Julie will follow-up with Jack via e-mail regarding Colorado’s plans
since he had to leave the call. Post-call update from Jack: - The Colorado
Campus Recycling Network is collaborating with their SRO on the annual Colorado
Recycling Summit, June 6-8 in Breckenridge Colorado. At this time they have
negotiated a discounted campus workshop and network planning meetings. See
www.colorado.edu/recycling/network for more info. on the network.
7. ABC's
Ed
and Pete will be talking to Karyn & Christine soon
about the status of the ABCs, future plans, etc. NRC has approved the
first round of chapters that were submitted for their review.
8. APPA meeting report
Pete sent
a summary of his meeting with APPA via e-mail on February 20. Rob and
Ed could provide a Recycle Mania update for
APPA publication. Rob will contact APPA regarding their deadlines so something
can be submitted.
9. Newsletter
Target
date for publication of our next newsletter is March 31st. If you
have anything to submit, please contact Pat.
