April 19, 2004 Conference Call Minutes

Present: Julie Cahillane, Jack DeBell, Angie Fowler, Alana Levine, Ed Newman, Carolyn Noack, Pete Pasterz

Not Present: Sheela Backen, Pat Chase, Rob Gogan, Michael Youdelman

1] ABC's process

Need to determine the process for completing this project. How do we handle a final edit of the document in order to publish it? Some feel that it is ready to go as is considering it is a document that will develop over time. Some are concerned that the document needs to be reviewed for factual content to be sure this resource is entirely accurate before offering it as a CURC product. Would it be best to put it out for peer-review or can the steers handle the review? Angie moved to send the total document to NRC for their review. When NRC approves it, CURC would post the document to the web site. And as a living/changing document, it should be posted with a disclaimer, asking for continuing input, stating that the document is not the absolute answer but does provide suggestions and ideas. Ed seconded. All were in favor of this proposal (with one abstention). Ed will arrange a conference call with Karyn, Christine, Pete, Jack and himself to discuss the plans with them.

2] Elections Update

Ed has received 3 nominations with one more expected (there are 6 total open positions). Julie will send a reminder to CURC list and RECYC-L about the deadline (Friday). Steers should also think of people who might be good for the steering committee and try to recruit them to run.

3] Membership Update

Angie will be sending a letter to all members without an e-mail address requesting they submit their address and update their CURC membership information. Her discussions with Richard Brundage from NRC: Richard is working on a new NRC membership database with which will be able to identify members based on council affiliation and will also be able to identify past members whose membership has expired. Richard should have this list to Angie this week. Angie will cross-reference NRCs list with ours to update with current membership status. Richard can setup a CURC listserv as is provided for the other councils. Angie will ask him to pursue this and we can determine parameters and uses of the list down the road.

4] SF workshop

Pat continues to work with Julie Muir on planning. Everything is in place for a half-day session set up as roundtable discussions. They are still working on the workshop location. The hotel is more expensive than the conference center, so it will probably be held at the conference center. The Saturday or Sunday evening social is
pretty well organized (being planned by the CA group).

Other State RO events – OH is developing a college and university track for their state conference. CURC can provide names and make contact with potential speakers but does not provide funding. The OH state conference is in Oct. Ed will provide the steers with a list of topics/speaker needs when they have been determined.
Information on the CO college group is available at www.colorado.edu/recycling/network. The Northeast Resource Recovery Assoc. annual conference in NH this June will feature a college and university “mini-track.”

5] Rapid Response

The Rapid Response package includes a letter, resource list and best practices. How do we promote the availability of the RR package? Ideas -- Press release, sent to RECYC-L, promote on NRC and CURC web sites, list it in the CURC brochure and discuss it at NRC in Sept. Who does a person request RR from? Requests should go to the steer(s). When requested we send a response with information… encourage or require CURC membership, encourage or require submittal of standards information, allow for a CURC steer to adopt and assist the school and/or the school must fill out a survey with their program information. Julie moved that requests for RR be submitted to CURC steers; any CURC member requesting RR will receive a letter; and non-members requesting RR will be presented to the steers for consideration. The motion was seconded and passed with unanimous approval.

6] Dell Conference Call

Dell is sponsoring an event where college students can call in to question Dell about their responsible (or not) handling of end-of-life computer equipment. This is scheduled for Monday, 4/26.

7] No word back from NRC on workplan/budget proposal.
