Tracy L. Artley, MPH

CURC has proven to be an invaluable resource to me in my role as Recycling Coordinator at the University of Michigan. I am proud to be the current Secretary of the CURC Steering Committee and would love to be given the opportunity to continue to serve the campus recycling community. I have worked to ensure that the membership is aware of the topics that the Steering Committee is discussing by providing detailed minutes of each conference call. Additionally, I have compiled a catalog of award opportunities available to CURC members, which can be found on the CURC website.

Judi Gard
Environmental Program Coordinator
Prima Community College

To Whom It May Concern at NRC and CURC:

Judi Gard from Pima Community College District (PCCD) recently completed her one year commitment to the College and University Recycling Council (CURC) Steering Committee. Her year’s of experience as the environmental and safety officer for PCCD, in addition, to her years of participation at the NRC conferences makes her an ideal candidate for a two year position on the CURC Steering Committee.

Judi is a team player who offers creative ideas and is willing to make a positive difference in sharing her experience, not only at Pima Community College District but with CURC. I have spoken to Judi about submitting her name for nomination and she is willing and excited to volunteer for a two year commitment.
Sincerely,
Deborah J. Hanson, ASID
Project & Environmental Coordinator
University of Arizona

Judi Dunn Gray
Sustainability Education Coordinator
Washington State University Recycling

I feel now that I am “seasoned”, and would like to continue to help CURC to strengthen our mission and goals. I enjoy serving on the board with an extraordinary group of people.

I would like the opportunity to continue to support recycling, but encourage the design of solutions on those common issues that affect colleges and universities. I would like to aid in keeping the lines of communication open between NRC and CURC’s board memberships. We need to work together to promote and grow recycling opportunities, this must be a common goal because a sustainable environment is critical to our survival Our strength is in our members.

Mary Jensen
Coordinator of Campus Sustainability and Recycling Programs
Keen State College

The CURC Steering Committee is a wonderfully collaborative group and it has been a pleasure to be a part of it for the past two years. The board is seeking to increase benefits to members - with additional toolkits and other resources - and formalize the RecycleMania structure as it continues to grow. I would appreciate the opportunity to continue to work towards these improvements over the next two years.

Ed Newman
Recycling and Refuse Manager
Ohio University

I've been on the Steering committee for several stints. The good side of that is I have some institutional memory as to the processes we've been through to get where we are today. And, where is that? Our steering committee, the gang who tries to enable member services to be increasingly helpful and more available has been pushing that agenda along and the steers have had a great working relationship among ourselves and others outside the committee to further CURC.

I suppose my best contribution is the introduction of RecycleMania, an intercollegiate recycling competition. This is now a CURC/NRC administrated activity. It has enabled CURC to garner more status and resouces from NRC and others enabling us to become a stronger organization while helping the participating schools encourage more recycling and waste reduction at their institutions. It has become a great tool for us to network, gain recognition, garner funds, benchmark and document and educate each other, our target audiences and the public at large. Otherwise I help where I can, at the conference, through our state organization which is a member of NRC, membership improvement and to help push for things to happen when that is needed.

I've been working as the Recycling and Refuse Manager at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio since 1990 and have been involved with solid waste mangement issues since 1992.
If you want to give someone else more of an opportunity to do be a steer besides me go for it but I am prepared to continue to serve whether I'm a steering committee member or not because I believe in the work CURC does to help school do better in your work.

Erica Spiegel
University of Vermont

I was a founding member of CURC in 1992 and would like to be involved with the organization again. As higher education embraces “sustainability,” our challenge is to keep recycling on the front burner and maintain the visibility and viability of our programs. Our challenge is also to incorporate new paradigms, such as “zero waste” into the organization’s mission and programs. I would like to restore the annual benchmarking tool devised by CURC several years ago as a measure for comparing recovery programs. While I recognize the value of Recyclemania as a promotional tool, it is lacking as an accurate benchmarking tool. I have a great deal of institutional knowledge about CURC, higher education facilities, and other professional organizations such as APPA. I’m interested in increasing membership of CURC by connecting CURC to other higher ed professional organizations, as well as to student environmental leaders, as they are the ones who will be replacing us in our jobs Thank you for your consideration.

Jeff Stoddart
Colorado State University Integrated Solid Waste

I would like to nominate Jeff Stoddart for the Curc Steering Committee. Jeff Stoddart is a member of NRC through Colorado Association for Recycling, Colorado State University Integrated Solid Waste (ISW) under Sheela Backen.

Jeff is currently a student at Colorado State University. He will be graduating in December 2007 with a Bachelor degree in Natural Resources Management with a minor is Statistics.

Jeff has worked for me in the ISW section for 8 years. He has a variety of experience in campus recycling. He is a member of the Live Green Team (recycling committee for housing areas). He also works on academic building recycling with the custodial staff assigned to these buildings.

Becky Valentich
University of Texas at Arlington

I would like to nominate Ms. Becky Valentich to serve on the CURC STEERING COMMITTEE. Becky has been working at the University of Texas at Arlington for 15 years, the last eight years in the Environmental Health & Safety Office, providing guidance and oversight to the University's Recycling Program. As full time Recycling Coordinator she has enhanced our program by adding new recycling streams as well as writing and receiving a grant for $135,595 to expand our compost program. By serving on this committee she can contribute her experience and knowledge as well as collect information that could improve our sustainability efforts on campus. Becky is a dedicated person who has worked tirelessly to promote campus recycling.
