Notes from the Recent Meeting of the NRC Board of Directors from NRC President Meg Morris

NRC’s Board of Directors joined southwest recyclers at the first ever New Mexico Recycling Coalition statewide conference held in Albuquerque earlier this month. The agenda for the NRC Board was packed, including discussions on the use of environmental marketing claims, proposed revisions to the NRC by-laws, and plans for the upcoming Annual Congress & Expo in Austin.

Additionally, recommendations from the President’s Blue Ribbon committee were considered. The goal of this committee was to deliberately examine the NRC’s current financial situation with the end result of establishing a plan to bring financial stability to the NRC. A number of recommendations were made that will increase unrestricted revenue and also decrease overhead expenses. Among other recommendations, the board approved a modest increase in the Congress registration fee, the establishment of a Leadership Council, the launching of a Legislative Affairs conference in Washington, D.C., and an underwriting campaign for NRC’s electronic and print publications.

Among other board activities, Kate Krebs provided a briefing on hearings scheduled for Capitol Hill on July 11, 2002. The board also worked on strategic planning and was briefed on fund development strategies that are currently being implemented. Relationships with NRC’s affiliated recycling organizations were discussed in depth. A task force is being established to evaluate the existing affiliation agreement and to develop options for the Recycling Organization Council to discuss in September.
